Crowns are made to cover a tooth that is likely to break, or can no longer be restored with a filling. They are most commonly done after root canal treatment, or when a large filling breaks or becomes decayed. The less tooth structure there is the more likely it will break. Crowns are placed over the weakened tooth providing strength and protecting the tooth against breakage. Crowns are also placed to protect a broken or cracked tooth from further damage.
It takes two appointments to restore with a crown. The first appointment will be removing decay and shaping the remaining tooth structure. In some cases, a build up material will be used if there is not enough tooth structure left. This makes the tooth strong to place the final crown. Then an impression is taken and you are sent home with a temporary crown. In two weeks, the temporary is removed and the permanent crown is seated.
A bridge is an option to fill a space created by a missing tooth. A bridge does require the use of the neighboring teeth on each side for support and replaces the missing tooth functionally and cosmetically.
